It's hard to think of two more fundamental social needs than a) not being forced to relieve yourself on the street and b) not having other people relieve themselves on the street yet the public toilet is an ignored and vanishing public amenity. The British Toilet Association reports that 40% of public toilets have closed since 2000 Victorian facilities in particular attract developers, not least because their dignified buildings endure: solidly built, centrally located and still embedded in the daily flow of the city.

More than 7,000 people in the UK write to MPs to voice fears about trans toilet ban

In an open letter, TransActual and Trans+ Solidarity Alliance urged the public to signal their opposition to the trans-exclusionary provisions after the EHRC handed its amended code of practice to equalities minister Bridget Phillipson in September. The EHRC updated its code, which provides guidance on creating gendered facilities such as toilets or changing rooms, following a Supreme Court ruling that found that trans women are excluded from the legal definition of a "woman" for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010.

This north London borough is getting seven new public toilets

The new automated public toilets have already opened in Newington Green, City Road and Highbury Fields and will open on Holloway Road, Seven Sisters Road and Highbury Crescent on September 1. Each WC is self cleaning, with the toilet bowl, seat, floor and walls automatically disinfected after every use. At night, they'll be blitz with ozone-based night cleaning to keep them fresh. Like any good public toilet, there'll also be plenty of bins of general and menstrual waste.
