Republicans are divided over adding federal preemption of state AI rules into a must-pass defense bill, prompting expected intraparty conflict.
President Donald Trump has publicly called it quits with one of his most stalwart MAGA-world supporters, calling Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene "'Wacky' Marjorie" and saying he would endorse a challenger against her in next year's midterms "if the right person runs." The dismissal of Greene - once the epitome of "Make America Great Again," sporting the signature red cap for President Joe Biden's 2024 State of the Union address and acting as a go-between for Trump and other Capitol Hill Republicans
But Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and other House Republicans aren't sympathetic to the rationale. While they aren't demanding the language be stripped from the government funding billwhich would punt it back to the Senate and delay the reopening of the governmentthey are instead pressing for a future vote on a separate, standalone piece of legislation that would invalidate the provision.
