London's ancient Smithfield and Billingsgate fresh food markets are set to move to the Royal Docks in Newham after the collapse of a previous scheme to relocate to Dagenham. The new preferred site agreed by market traders after talks with the City of London Corporation and the GLA would see the meat and fish markets relocate in 2028. The latest plan follows the scrapping of a move to a huge new market site in Dagenham last year because of spiralling costs.

The City of London Corporation - which currently operates the centuries-old meat and fish markets - said it was working with the Greater London Authority and Newham Council on the "exciting " proposals. to turn Smithfield Market's current site in the City of London into cultural space and to use Billingsgate Market's site at Poplar, east London for new homes.

The Royal Docks Originals festival will feature over 50 events highlighting the area's transformation into a cultural hub, with the theme of Metamorphosis.

This summer, the Royal Docks is opening a large lido from July 27 to August 18, offering free swimming and a sandy area for families.
