By Jonathan Randles, Bloomberg Bankrupt luxury retailer Saks Global Enterprises is moving to block Simon Property Group from closing two locations in California and New York, a clash that exposes a widening rift between one of the nation's largest mall owners and one of its most prominent anchor tenants. Simon is seeking to take over a Saks location at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California and a Saks OFF Fifth discount store at an outlet mall in Woodbury, New York.
The company recently announced that the closure-part of a larger plan affecting nine other U.S. stores-is an effort to "place greater attention on our high-performing and high-potential store locations." The additional closures, set to begin in January 2026, include locations in Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; East Hanover, New Jersey; Niagara Falls, New York; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Plymouth, Michigan; Washington, D.C.; and West Hartford, Connecticut.
Expect a dazzling state-of-the-art show where "the lights will dance to a curated medley of uplifting music, creating a luminous celebration of light and sound," Saks announced today. Though the lights dimmed last year amid financial uncertainty, the show is back this year as of November 24. It will run through Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas, lighting up each night for all to enjoy for free.
