Democrat Taylor Rehmet flipped a reliably Republican state Senate district in Texas in Saturday's special election, continuing a string of surprise victories for Democrats across the U.S. in the year since Donald Trump returned to the White House. The Republican president immediately distanced himself from the loss. It's a district he had won by 17 points in 2024. At Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, Trump told reporters, "I'm not involved in that. That's a local Texas race."
"Voters will certainly be confused about the shifting district lines in two elections so close together in time," Kim Nalder, director of the Project for an Informed Electorate at Sacramento State, said in an email. She added that the special election is likely to get "fairly low turnout," with those who do cast ballots being "better informed and more partisan."

The death of Doug LaMalfa, a seven-term Republican congressmember from Northern California, was announced Tuesday, hours after he was rushed to a Chico hospital. The sheriff's office in Butte County said it received a 911 call reporting a medical emergency at LaMalfa's home around 6:50 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5. The congressman was taken to Enloe Hospital, in Chico, and immediately underwent emergency surgery. He died during the surgery, the sheriff's office reported.

In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump carried Tennessee's Seventh Congressional District by 22 points. Last night, in a special election to represent the district, the Republican Matt Van Epps won by only nine points, defeating the Democratic State Representative Aftyn Behn. Trump celebrated the outcome on Truth Social as a "BIG Congressional WIN," but the margin of victory in a deep-red district is ominous for Republicans. Van Epps underperformed Trump by 13 percentage points, a sign that the party is vulnerable heading into the 2026 midterms.
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will ask the public tomorrow night (Oct. 28) for their ideas on how to fill the vacancy left when the sheriff was fired. The board unanimously ousted elected Sheriff Christina Corpus on Oct. 14. Undersheriff Dan Perea, who was hired by Corpus, has assumed the sheriff's duties but won't be elevated to the title of interim sheriff.
