The Atlanta Braves made a minor move (literally) on Tuesday morning, signing left-hander Danny Young to a one-year, split deal. The 31-year-old was previously with the New York Mets, who recently outrighted him, giving Atlanta the opportunity to pick him up. He did undergo Tommy John surgery in May, so he won't be on the mound at the beginning of the season.
The Marlins and right-hander discussed an extension earlier this year, according to reporting from Will Sammon, Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic. However, they didn't come close to getting something done. These talks occurred when the team approached the righty's representatives in the spring and the two sides were about $15MM apart, according to Isaac Azout of Fish on First. Both Azout and Christina De Nicola of MLB.com say that the talks are expected to continue this offseason.
The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball announced they've signed Kenta Maeda. The 37-year-old righty said in August that he planned to return to his home country next year. A report from Japan's Sankei Sports indicates he signed a two-year contract. This will all but officially close the book on Maeda's career in the major leagues. He pitched in nine MLB seasons, turning in a 4.20 earned run average while coming up a little shy of 1000 innings pitched.
Cedric first appeared in mid-May in the FCL and made two starts there, before being sent to Rome for his final 13 starts of the season. He had a 0.00 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 13 strikeouts to two walks in 7.1 innings with the FCL team before he pitched to a 3.74 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in Rome, striking out 66 and walking 41 in 53 innings.
Now 31 years old, Gonsolin looked like a potential rotation stalwart with the Dodgers early in his career. From 2019-22, he pitched a combined 272 2/3 innings with a 2.51 ERA while fanning nearly one quarter of his opponents and posting a solid 8.5% walk rate. A pair of IL stints due to shoulder inflammation, plus time off due to an ankle sprain and forearm inflammation, limited Gonsolin's workload in that four-year period.
Rehabbing New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole threw off flat ground in the outfield on Wednesday afternoon, prior to Game 4 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays. He threw from roughly 60 feet out and with considerable velocity, though nowhere near 100%. Amidst the Atlanta Braves managerial buzz, Hall of Famer Chipper Jones told 680 The Fan that he has no interest in managing his former club. He did, however, make mention of possibly joining the staff as a hitting coach. It would not be Jones' first appearance on the staff. Beginning in 2021, he took on a part-time role as the Braves' hitting consultant. So, while Jones has ruled out managing the team, there is still a possibility he serves the team in some capacity.
Miami made three errors in the second as Detroit scored twice. With Spencer Torkelson on first, Colt Keith's grounder to first went off Wagaman for the first error. Second baseman Máximo Acosta retrieved the ball in foul territory and threw wildly past third. Left fielder Troy Johnston tried to run down the ball but it bounced off a fence, through his legs and past as Keith reached third. Keith scored on Dillon Dingler's single.
Liam Hendriks' long stint on the injured list has now been extended by forearm tightness, Red Sox manager told the Boston Globe's Tim Healey and other reporters. This setback has halted Hendriks' throwing and has likely ended his season after 14 games and 13 2/3 innings at the big league level. Forearm issues aren't a good sign for a pitcher who missed all of the 2024 season due to a Tommy John surgery,
"Oh, he's a real (postseason) option," Roberts said. "I don't know what capacity, but when you're playing meaningful games, young player, you're looking at how they handle their emotions. And Emmet is, I like to use the word unflappable, and it's a huge compliment. And he's unflappable."

For the first time, that question feels like it could be a "Yes," last night's results notwithstanding. But how many times have we been reeled in by that possibility over the last 20 years?
The Brewers announced Wednesday that they've placed right-hander Shelby Miller on the 60-day injured list due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The 34-year-old exited a game earlier this week after telling manager Pat Murphy that he'd felt a "pop" in his elbow, and it seems he's encountered a worst-case scenario. Milwaukee has selected the contract of righty Joel Payamps to take Miller's spot on the 40-man roster and in the big league bullpen.
The Orioles announced this afternoon that right-hander Cody Poteet has been activated from the 60-day injured list and outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. The club had not previously announced that Poteet was placed on waivers, but he evidently cleared and now will head to the minor leagues if he accepts the assignment. Poteet, 31, made just one appearance for the Orioles this year where he surrendered five runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings of work while walking two and striking out just one.
Lucas Giolito goes to the hill where he's been hot and cold of late. Over his last four starts, Giolito has two excellent outings against the Astros and Marlins, where he allowed a total of two runs over a combined 14.1 inning of work, and then two stinkers where he struggled to throw strikes and only got through 4.2 inning of work against both the Padres and the Yankees.
