It was clear when the Toronto Raptors decided to abandon the Davion Mitchell experiment, which had proven to be effective in spurts, that Jamal Shead was fully trusted as the team's primary focus of a tenacious and gritty guard for the foreseeable future. I was really impressed with Shead's rookie campaign, especially given the circumstances that brought him to Toronto in the first place. He was an older prospect, and the only reason he ended up with the Raptors is because they managed to pull off a trade with the Sacramento Kings during 2024 draft night,
To be clear, it's a stretch to say that he's the Raptors' secret weapon, but there's two realistic possibilities exist. One, the Raptors' transition defence remains strong and aggressive defensive schemes allows - or even hides - some of Mamu's defensive weaknesses. Two, he'll be less of a liability on defence as he already has the physical tools - he moves well - but he'll need to make better reads.
Matt Thomas, who played parts of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons with the Toronto Raptors, has signed a deal with Spanish club Fundacion CB Granada, according to Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype's transactions list. Known for his three-point shooting, Thomas has enjoyed a long career overseas, split up by a quick stop in the NBA. In addition to his season-and-a-half with the Raptors, Thomas played 19 games with the Utah Jazz during the 2020-21 season before playing 40 with the Chicago Bulls in 2021-22.
At each of the past four trade deadlines, the Raptors have dealt a first-round pick despite not being a playoff team in three of those years and not having home-court advantage in the fourth.
