For the last few weeks, in our series Love You for You , we've been bringing you conversations between transgender and nonbinary kids and the people in their lives who love and support them so they can thrive. This week, we hear excerpts from two longer conversations we're dropping on -year-old transgender Zen Blossom, who works at a Black trans cultural center, our podcast between young people in their 20s and transgender elders, whose lives reflect the long arc of transgender activism here in California.
Going from 10 years ago when people didn't understand who trans people were to now where people have a lot of misconceptions and they think they know who trans people are but they still don't-I'm really invested in trying to show a more approachable and real and hopefully relatable side of that,
Miss Major, 84 has been in the hospital for 12 days. She has had ongoing health problems, having posted in January that she needed 24-hour nursing care after a recent hospitalization. She had a stroke in 2019. Related: 'Enough Is Enough' 10 LGBTQ+ Elders Share Their Words of Wisdom Miss Major, a Black genderqueer transgender woman, has dedicated the last 50 years to advocating for incarcerated trans people, particularly trans women of color, who are often housed in men's prisons, as she was. She has worked for multiple HIV and AIDS organizations, and she was the first executive director of the Transgender Gender-Variant and Intersex Justice Project, a role she held until she retired in 2015.
During Pride in London, Girli wore a denim jumpsuit with the message "F**k JK Rowling" and "Trans Women Are Women" to express her stance on transgender rights.
