Confirmation that the Whitewebbs Oak was alive at the time of its felling felt inevitable. I visited the tree in the aftermath and there was absolutely no doubt in my mind the tree was very much alive. There were still green shoots and healthy buds and, in fact, just before the felling, tree VETcert-qualified consultants found the tree was in good health with a full crown.

Debs Newman, 60, was bearing witness to the loss of three mature lime trees in Falmouth when she was seized by officers. Newman, who said she had never been in trouble with the police, fell to the floor and hit her head, leaving her needing treatment from paramedics. She said: It all happened so quickly. I think someone had my arms, someone my feet. I heard a crack and my head hit the pavement.

The oak's removal has raised significant concerns about environmental conservation, as it was deemed a fine specimen with a life expectancy of at least 50 years.
