Biniam Girmay is set to compete in the prestigious Milan-San Remo race this weekend after taking time off for the birth of his second child. Girmay’s team, Intermarché-Wanty, remains optimistic about his performance following a successful sprint in the Volta ao Algarve. Previously, Girmay secured the best result for his team in San Remo in 2022. He believes his upbringing in Eritrea, with its challenging terrain, has contributed to his strong positioning skills in races. His team COO mentioned that Girmay is determined to excel, considering this race one of his top aspirations for the year.
Fast forward two more years, and with wins in Gent-Wevelgem, the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France already in his palmares, Girmay will be gunning to be in the running on Saturday, team COO Maxime Segers told Nieuwsblad, even despite a previous month out from racing.
In general, it's all about the positioning and also about the legs. Sometimes I ask myself - I don't know how I'm always in a good position. It's just like a gift.
