Governing through difficult times | Shirley McClellan & Verlyn Olson, The Final Mile, Ep 5
Agriculture crises often occur in clusters and demand coordinated leadership across multiple jurisdictions. Governing agriculture is complicated by shared responsibilities between provincial and federal governments, requiring alignment with other provinces and federal partners to move forward. During the 2003 BSE crisis, Alberta’s first positive case on May 20, 2003 triggered rapid recognition of severity and a coordinated response to stabilize the sector. Producers and industry leaders focused on work rather than panic. Later crises such as food safety recalls, major floods, and transportation backlogs reinforced the need for relationships and communication among producers, governments, processors, and industry groups. Research, innovation, and producer resilience support optimism for the future.
"“When you have an issue that affects the industry, you have to get the federal government and... other provinces onside with what you're doing to move ahead,” she says."
"“The agricultural community... didn't really panic. They dug their heels in and got to work,” she says."
"“Agriculture is just such an important ministry for that kind of thing,” Olson says, noting that producers, governments, processors, and industry groups all need to remain aligned during difficult periods."
