The University of Kent's study reveals that simple animated GIFs can enhance sleep quality in professional female footballers. Targeting sleep hygiene, researchers provided athletes with customized GIFs that conveyed key messages like 'Screens away 30 minutes before bed.' Despite the demanding mid-season context, participants noted significant sleep improvements. This approach highlights a practical and efficient sleep enhancement method, demonstrating that engaging visuals can facilitate better sleep habits among elite athletes, suggesting a shift from traditional sleep coaching to more accessible strategies.
'Working with professional female athletes for this study not only allowed us to help improve their sleep quality, but it also helped us to identify a new time- and resource-efficient method of sleep enhancement.'
Following the GIF interventions the professional footballers reported improvements to their sleep by the end of the nine-week study. Even more impressively, these improvements happened mid-season.
