America's Best And Worst EV Charging Networks: These Fail Half The Time
Briefly

A recent Consumer Reports study reveals that EV drivers face significant issues at public charging stations, notably Shell Recharge and EVgo, where problems occur nearly half the time. In a survey of 1,230 electric car owners, charging reliability was assessed, showing Tesla Superchargers at the top with just 4% failure rates. Rivian followed closely at 5%, while other networks like Electrify America and ChargePoint showed better but still concerning rates. Notable issues included malfunctioning payment systems and faulty hardware, indicating a pressing need for improvements in the infrastructure supporting electric vehicle travel.
Road-tripping in an electric vehicle is becoming increasingly easier in the U.S. thanks to a burgeoning network of public charging stations, but this experience is far from perfect.
A new Consumer Reports study found that some charging networks are so buggy that drivers have nearly a 50/50 chance of running into problems when they pull up to recharge.
The same can't be said for Shell Recharge and EVgo stations. Drivers using Shell Recharge stations experienced problems during 48% of their charging sessions.
Glitchy payment systems, broken hardware and slow charging speeds were the most serious problems, with 76% of the issues involving dead touchscreens.
