Some downtown residents in Toronto oppose the construction of a bike lane on The Esplanade, fearing it will reduce road space and hinder access for seniors and people with disabilities. Sharon Danley, representing the Downtown Concerned Citizens Organization at a news conference, highlighted that the bike lanes have forced those reliant on public transport to walk further, complicating life for vulnerable groups. Despite these concerns, city consultations in 2019-2021 indicated more than half of respondents in favor of the bikeway, which is now set to be constructed as a part of larger infrastructure work.
"Bike lanes restrict road space. They have turned streets into parking lots, with residents unable to shop, get their kids to events, and seriously impact emergency services and Wheel-Trans."
"Bike lanes prioritize able-bodied young male cyclists while ignoring seniors and the disabled who can't cycle. Yet we are supposed to be an accessible city."
