Could Mazda Build A Rotary-Hybrid Miata? Maybe
Briefly

Mazda introduced its Iconic SP concept in fall 2023, a sleek coupe designed to herald a new era for its sports cars. This announcement brought two critical insights: Mazda's dedication to sports car production and the introduction of a compact alternative powertrain. Global CFO Jeff Guyton highlighted their innovation with a lightweight motor capable of using various fuels. Despite historical challenges, particularly with the Wankel rotary engine's emissions issues in the U.S., Mazda engineers express optimism for future development. The hope is to meet stringent regulations while paving the way for this next-generation rotary engine application in hybrids.
"What if I said there was a lightweight motor that is the size of a milk crate, can deliver a couple hundred horsepower, has few moving parts..." says Jeff Guyton.
"The problem is American emissions regulations. The air almost has to come out cleaner than it goes in," says Ryuchi Umeshita.
