"The open gangway trains feature cars joined via accordion-style apparatus, allowing passengers to walk the length of an entire train without going outside. This design replaces the interior doors that have been standard on subway trains for a century."
"MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber mentioned that the agency is still evaluating both the operational and maintenance challenges that come with open gangway trains, which will influence the percentage of these cars in the new order."
"Lieber indicated that the different maintenance needs of open gangway cars include considerations for elevating them to access undercarriages, the required parts, and their longevity."
The MTA is considering the implementation of open gangway trains in its latest order of 2,390 new subway cars. These trains allow passengers to move freely between cars, replacing traditional interior doors. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber stated that the agency is assessing operational and maintenance challenges associated with these trains. Up to 60% of the new order could feature open gangway designs. The agency is also examining passenger behavior and the benefits of increased capacity that the open layout may provide.
