The federal government is considering a proposal to impose a $250 annual registration fee on electric vehicle (EV) owners, with the aim of replenishing revenue lost from gasoline taxes vital for infrastructure funding. This proposal, led by Rep. Sam Graves, seeks to charge EV drivers who currently contribute little to gas tax revenues, despite important contributions from gasoline-driven vehicles to the Highway Trust Fund. The fee could disproportionately affect EV users, costing nearly as much as purchasing 1,400 gallons of gas, despite average annual consumption being much lower.
If you're one of those tree-hugging electric-vehicle drivers who dares to bypass the gas station entirely, the federal government has a message for you: it's time to pony up $250.
The gas tax made up 81% of the $43.5 billion in revenue deposited into the Highway Trust Fund, the program used to pay for infrastructure projects, last year.
