Apple has announced a delay in the rollout of its AI-powered Siri upgrade, originally set for 2024, indicating that development is taking longer than anticipated. This delay is unusual for the company, which rarely postpones products that have already been announced. A company spokesperson noted that the aim is to deliver a more personalized and advanced virtual assistant capable of answering complex questions. The delay raises user expectations as Apple had already introduced some AI features in iOS 18, which began rolling out in October.
"It's going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year," said Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy.
Apple has a rare history of product delays post-announcement; notable past delays include AirPods and the white iPhone 4, as highlighted by John Gruber.
Despite announcing AI-powered updates at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024, Apple has not provided specific timelines for the new Siri's release, raising user expectations.
Apple's intention for an upgraded Siri includes a more personalized approach, promising to handle complex queries using individual user context.
