Apple May Shift to Making US iPhones in India. It Won't Be Easy
Briefly

Apple is set to transition the assembly of all iPhones intended for the US to India by the end of 2026. This strategy emerges from rising tariffs on Chinese imports, making Chinese-manufactured goods less favorable. Production in India, which commenced with the iPhone SE in 2017, ramped up for flagship models in 2023. Analysts estimate that to meet US demand, Apple's Indian production must double to around 80-85 million iPhones, although it currently produces 40-43 million annually, mainly for export.
Apple's shifting of its manufacturing to India is an insurance policy against chaos in US-China relations, symbolizing a costly turbo-charging of its production efforts.
Our estimates say that Apple produced around 40 to 43 million iPhones in India last year, with about 12 million consumed locally and the rest exported.
