Apple’s new iPhone 16e features the C1 modem, touted as the most power-efficient modem in an iPhone. After seven years of development, the C1 chip integrates with device hardware and software, optimizing performance and energy usage. This important component not only enhances power efficiency but also employs machine learning to prioritize data traffic efficiently. Apple plans to expand its use across various devices, establishing a foundation for future generations and aiming to differentiate its products through this technology.
Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji explained how Apple sees this latest addition to the company's growing processor family. "We build a platform for generations," Srouji said. "C1 is the start, and we're going to keep improving that technology each generation, so that it becomes a platform for us that will be used to truly differentiate this technology in our devices."
The reason it can say that is that the modem integrates with both the hardware and software on the Apple device. That integration lets it optimize the relationship between all the components, unleashing better performance and power efficiency.
Apple calls it "the most power efficient modem ever in an iPhone." The C1 chip first appears in the iPhone 16e and is expected to debut in other Apple devices soon.
Another advantage of the C1 chip is Apple’s ability to optimize device processes, including through the use of machine learning and AI.
