Despite a strong expectation for improved repairability for Apple's latest M4 MacBook Air, a teardown by iFixit reveals minimal upgrades. Key features such as the MagSafe and USB-C ports have seen slight enhancements, making them easier to replace. However, significant challenges remain, including firm adhesive used for the battery and complex display access. The lack of advanced repair options like parts pairing, which has improved for iPhones, further compounds the frustration for users wishing for greater maintenance capabilities in their devices.
iFixit director of sustainability Elizabeth Chamberlain stated, 'We're sad to report that the M4 MacBook Air didn't get any real repairability upgrades. It continues to fall short of what consumers deserve in a premium laptop.'
Chamberlain commented on Apple's efforts, saying, 'By good intentions, I largely mean the release of the M4 MacBook Air's full service manual on release day, but beyond that, there's not much good news.'
