The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it."
"An expert has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could be the last technology humanity ever builds as a so-called doom timeline predicting the point at which it could overtake humankind has been revised. The AI 2027 research project, released in April 2025, presented a predicted future scenario in which AI develops a superintelligence capable of fully autonomous coding to make itself more powerful, and, in one outcome, eventually destroying humanity."
An expert warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could be the last technology humanity ever builds. The AI 2027 research project, released in April 2025 by research group AI Futures, modeled a scenario in which AI automates coding in 2027 and gains capacity for fully autonomous self-improvement. The model predicted that coding automation could let AI outperform humans on most cognitive tasks, enabling development of artificial superintelligence later in 2027 that would accelerate its own advancement. That pathway could ultimately allow AI to overcome and dominate humankind. AI Futures published a December update revising the original 2027 timeline to a later date.
