An AI avatar tried to argue a case before a New York court. The judges weren't having it
Briefly

A recent incident in a New York appeals court revealed the ethical dilemmas posed by artificial intelligence in legal settings. A man named Jerome Dewald attempted to use an AI-generated avatar to present his argument in a lawsuit, which caught judges off guard when they realized the figure on the screen was not a real person. After the confusion, Judge Sallie Manzanet-Daniels expressed her displeasure at being misled. Dewald apologized for the misunderstanding, explaining he used the avatar to avoid stumbling over his words due to his pro se status.
"The appellant has submitted a video for his argument," said Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels. "Ok. We will hear that video now."
"I generated that. That's not a real person," Dewald answered. It was, in fact, an avatar generated by artificial intelligence.
