Can we trust AI in qualitative research? (opinion)
Briefly

Walt Whitman wrote, "I am large, I contain multitudes." In qualitative social science, this reflects both human complexity and the limitations of AI, which lacks a human perspective.
While AI can emulate qualitative research patterns, it fails to capture the researcher's positionality—a key element that fosters trust in social science findings.
Using AI for qualitative analysis may be tempting, but it neglects the importance of meaning-making cycles that involve the investigator's identity and context.
Hurrying to adopt AI tools can be problematic in qualitative research, as these tools cannot provide the necessary self-awareness and personal connection essential for trustworthy conclusions.
