County hopes to protect government jobs threatened by AI
Briefly

To mitigate job losses from AI implementation, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has mandated that departments propose new positions to offset potential cuts. Recognizing the urgency of adapting to AI's role, supervisors aim to protect unionized roles, emphasizing the need for responsible integration of technology into operations. The resolution stipulates that positions affected by AI cannot be cut until they are vacated through attrition, ensuring job security while moving towards modernization. The approach reflects a broader trend in local governments grappling with AI's rapidly changing landscape.
"There was the Industrial Revolution, now there's the AI revolution," said Supervisor Jackie Speier at the meeting. "We're going to have to adapt."
"We are searching for real jobs for the future, not jobs that can be cut away," Mueller said.
"I want to make sure, as we move forward, that we embrace artificial intelligence," said board president David Canepa. "At the same time, we do it in a responsible manner."
