"When Hyundai acquired the robotics giant Boston Dynamics in 2021, very few observers thought that using mechanical dogs to spot-check welds in car factories would be the endgame. Today, at CES 2026, Hyundai offered a detailed look at what it really wants to do with robots: make them more humanlike, and then put them to work building cars. The goal, Hyundai officials said, is simple: better safety, better quality, more durability and reliability, and at lower production costs."
""We understand the concerns about job security when you deploy the robotic solutions," said Jaehoon Chang, the Vice Chairman of the Hyundai Motor Group. "But as we have demonstrated for our aspirations of human-centered [robotics], we must do the right thing for people in terms of collaboration. And that means we probably need more jobs." That will include people, Chang said, to "guide, supervise and maintain" these robots."
Hyundai acquired Boston Dynamics in 2021 and aims to develop humanlike robots for automotive manufacturing. The program targets improved safety, quality, durability, reliability, and reduced production costs. A scalable production system aims to manufacture 30,000 robots annually beginning in 2028. The Atlas humanoid will start performing small tasks at the Georgia Metaplant in 2028, with plans by 2030 for robots to assemble components and take on tedious, repetitive, and dangerous work. Human roles will shift toward guiding, supervising, maintaining robots, and building the supporting ecosystem, with changes to labor occurring gradually rather than immediately.
