Journalists are using generative AI tools without company oversight, study finds
Briefly

A recent survey by Trint revealed that 42.3% of journalists from various newsrooms are using unapproved generative AI tools at work. The use of AI is viewed as a way to enhance efficiency and maintain competitiveness in journalism. Although 69% of those surveyed believe that increasing efficiency is the primary reason for integrating AI, concerns regarding inaccurate outputs, reputational risks, and data privacy are more pressing than the challenge posed by 'shadow AI' or unapproved usage. Some employees are even paying for AI tools themselves, as company guidelines encourage innovation within ethical boundaries.
"Plenty of editorial staff here use AI from time to time, for example to reformat data or as a reference tool. Some of them do pay for it out of their own pockets."
"We encourage everyone at Business Insider to use AI to help us innovate in ways that don't compromise our values. We also have an enterprise LLM available for all employees to use."
