Meet your new colleague - the Machine Learning Admin
Briefly

Organizations are now creating a new role called the Machine Learning Administrator (ML admin) to oversee the lifecycle of large language models. According to Nutanix's Chief AI Officer, these professionals are responsible for pairing models with infrastructure, managing compliance, and ensuring system uptime. The shift indicates that business units are increasingly tackling AI initiatives independently from IT. This new role might require training existing IT admins rather than hiring externally, reflecting a growing need for skilled personnel in AI management.
The ML admin articulates, designs, plans, executes, and monitors the emergent large language model lifecycle, bridging the gap between IT and AI deployments.
Our hypothesis is that the IT admin will continue to manage the infrastructure up to the layer of the large language models. That's the red line for now.
As application vendors add AI to their products, they'll assume users have the required large language model in place. The ML admin's job will be to provision their employer's AI resources.
We are building the runway, and the control system, and flying the plane at the same time; this indicates the complex role of ML admins in organizations.
