Amidst the escalating competition in AI, Meta is restructuring by reducing roughly 5% of its global workforce, totaling around 4,000 jobs, while also focusing on hiring more AI engineers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized a performance improvement strategy, indicating a shift to quicken the exit of low performers. The urgency to enhance AI capabilities has intensified due to the rise of a new AI model, DeepSeek. Meta plans to invest significantly in AI initiatives, including substantial GPU purchases and expanding its data center capabilities.
In an internal memo announcing the cuts, the Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg said he decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster.
The main hiring emphasis moving forward will be machine-learning engineers, with Meta now rushing to gather up experts in the field to amplify its AI development progress.
Meta's urgency on this front has seemingly been exacerbated by the launch of DeepSeek, a faster, and arguably better AI model which was reportedly developed for a lot less.
Meta will spend NVidia H100 GPUs in its AI data centers and is looking to activate up to 1.3 'Mesa' data center in Arizona.
