Michael I. Jordan, a prominent mathematician and cognitive scientist, emphasizes the importance of human contribution in using AI tools effectively. Celebrating his recent recognition with the BBVA Foundation Award, he discusses the excessive hype surrounding generative AI, cautioning against individualistic claims of intelligence. As an academic rather than an entrepreneur, he prefers understanding complex systems over commercializing technology. Jordan believes AI is a powerful tool, but acknowledges it needs collaboration among people to drive real progress in fields like medicine, climate change, and creative arts.
The hype will just continue. The people who develop the technology love to talk about it and they love to extrapolate, but I think there's a little too much hubris, also.
We're not that smart individually. These companies to me are developing tools, they're powerful tools. But a tool laying on the ground doesn't do very much.
