A government trial involving 20,000 civil servants demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to save nearly two weeks of work annually. Generative AI tools, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, were employed to automate routine tasks including drafting documents and summarising emails. Corresponding research from the Alan Turing Institute suggests that AI could assist with up to 41% of tasks in the public sector. The trial yielded time savings of 26 minutes per employee per day, showcasing AI's potential to enhance productivity in various government departments.
According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the government trial saved users an average of 26 minutes per day.
These findings show that AI can significantly enhance public sector productivity, saving civil servants valuable time on routine tasks and allowing them to focus on more complex issues.
