Governor Kathy Hochul signed the RAISE Act after state lawmakers originally passed it in June and later agreed to defer some requested changes until next year. The law requires AI developers to publish information about safety protocols and to report safety incidents to the state within 72 hours. The law creates a new office within the Department of Financial Services to monitor AI development. Companies that fail to submit safety reports or make false statements can be fined up to $1 million for a first violation and $3 million for subsequent violations. The law follows similar legislation in California and prompted calls for federal action.
