OpenAI has announced a $50 million investment to create NextGenAI, a research consortium comprising 15 institutions dedicated to advancing AI research and education. This consortium includes prestigious universities and aims to foster collaboration to drive progress faster than individual institutions can achieve alone. As highlighted by OpenAI's COO Brad Lightcap, the consortium will keep building on the legacy of academic contributions to AI, supporting various initiatives that include AI literacy, medical research, and broader access to academic resources, thereby benefiting students and educators alike.
"The field of AI wouldn't be where it is today without decades of work in the academic community. Continued collaboration is essential to build AI that benefits everyone," Brad Lightcap said.
"NextGenAI will accelerate research progress and catalyze a new generation of institutions equipped to harness the transformative power of AI," according to Brad Lightcap.
OpenAI aims to support students, educators, and researchers advancing the frontiers of knowledge through initiatives supported by NextGenAI, focusing on AI literacy and medical research.
The NextGenAI consortium, including 15 institutions, will use AI to accelerate research breakthroughs and enhance education by providing funding and computational resources.
