A South Los Angeles family discovered a scammer used AI-generated deepfake video and cloned voice to impersonate General Hospital star Steve Burton. The victim, Abigail, received videos and messages on Facebook Messenger, then WhatsApp, that convinced her the actor loved her and planned a life together. Vivian Ruvalcaba saved a video and showed it to AI experts, who found the clip likely made with software cloning Burton's image and voice. Abigail has a history of Bipolar 1 Disorder, which contributed to her belief in the fabricated relationship. The scammer referenced lost properties and a beach house to deepen the deception.
I'm sickened by it because it went this far,
Why didn't I know this? Why didn't I see what was happening? What did I miss?
Hello, Abigail. I love you so much, darling. I had to make this video to make you happy, my love.
In her head, there was no scammer," Ruvalcaba said. "She was talking to Steve Burton the entire time.
