Fang Fang's reflections during Wuhan's COVID-19 lockdown showcased life under quarantine, initially celebrated but later censored. Her text, published as "Wuhan Diary," captures profound human experiences amid crisis. Previously, her novel "Soft Burial," addressing historical trauma, also faced censorship despite acclaim. As her works gain international attention, Fang Fang discusses the importance of documenting history, memory, and the impacts of censorship on creativity and discourse, highlighting the ongoing struggle for freedom in artistic expression in China.
In fact, the term "soft burial" has two meanings, at least for me. One refers to a custom in eastern cultures where people bury their loved ones not deep enough, which symbolizes the inability to fully let go of trauma and memory.
In writing about the lockdown and my experiences in quarantine, I aimed to capture not just the physical isolation but the emotional and psychological impacts on individuals within Wuhan.
