Ameya Desai has a cherished tradition with her father, Nikhil, where he tells her stories during their morning commutes. Inspired by these tales, Ameya created her award-winning podcast entry for NPR's Student Podcast Challenge, interviewing her grandfather Kishor Desai about his life in Uganda before the 1972 expulsion of Asians by Idi Amin. Kishor shares vivid memories from his childhood until the upheaval scattered his family, resulting in deep themes of migration and family unity amid adversity. This blend of storytelling and personal history highlights the importance of narratives in preserving family legacies.
Kishor's life was completely turned around when he was in college. In the summer of 1972, Uganda's leader, Idi Amin, ordered the mass expulsion of Asians. Kishor suddenly had 90 days to leave the country.
My family was dispersed all over the world. We were never a single family unit again. Kishor was stateless for years while he finished his studies.
