The new exhibit 'Past Present Futures' at Oakland's Main Library showcases the journeys of five students from Oakland International High School, representing their stories through art. Each profile silhouette, crafted by students, depicts their travels from countries including Honduras, Yemen, Guatemala, and Eritrea. The collaborative project involves Oakland International and the Civic Design Studio, initiated in 2021, culminating in unveiling during the library's open house. The artwork will stay displayed for a year, enhancing the library's role in fostering community through storytelling and cultural expression.
"It makes this space vibrant and honors the place the library holds as a catalyst for community-building through storytelling," Beards said.
"The project began in Sara Stillman's art class at Oakland International in 2021, and with help from the Castlemont High School Fab Lab, it will become an ongoing piece of architecture at the library."
"Each of the faces, which are four to five feet tall, represents one Oakland International High School student, documenting their treks from countries like Honduras, Yemen, Guatemala, and Eritrea."
"The artwork will be up for at least a year, said Tarshel Beards, the library's community relations manager."
