In preparation for the reopening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, Adam Lindemann has organized 'Urhobo + Abstraction,' showcasing Urhobo sculptures alongside Black American abstractionists. Held at his residence, the exhibition features historical 19th-century works alongside influential modern artists like Ed Clark and Norman Lewis. The display connects the rich heritage of African art to contemporary themes, especially focusing on the narrative connections spurred by movements like Spiral that emerged during the Civil Rights era.
"I had to start the show with Simpson, who was also a foremost dealer of African art," Lindemann tells The Art Newspaper. "It's important to highlight these connections."
Lindemann wanted to create aesthetic and narrative connections in Urhobo + Abstraction between historical works and Black American abstractionists, particularly the 1960s Spiral movement.
