Julian Pace's exhibit, Dog People, at The Bunker in LA explores the close bond between artists and their pets, particularly dogs. The show transcends simple representation, delving into how artists such as O'Keeffe, Hockney, and Rivera are mythologized through their relationships with their animals. By painting these figures alongside their dogs, Pace invites viewers to consider how pets shape our understanding of these cultural icons. The exhibit reflects a collective curiosity about the intersection of art and personal life, showcasing a unique blend of imagination and insight into the lives of the artists.
We love to know about artists and their pets. I think this is a collective imagination thing, where we sort of want to understand a personality through the animal an artist chooses to surround themselves with.
By painting O'Keeffe, Hockney, Frida, Rivera and others (and himself) with dogs, Pace adds to a sort of myth of the person. What do we know about them and what does their pet of choice do to our understanding of the icon?
