Council mulls budget priorities ahead of vote - Austin Monitor
Briefly

Austin City Council is approaching the vote on a more than $6 billion budget. Council members laid out their spending priorities, reaching consensus on various aspects. Mayor Kirk Watson emphasized the importance of viewing the budget as a single entity, not contingent on a Tax Rate Election (TRE). While Council Member Marc Duchen voiced opposition to a TRE, he supported a slight increase in the budget rate. Amendments proposed include enhancing transportation programs and addressing funding differences in public health, arts, and public safety concerns through innovative staffing solutions.
Mayor Kirk Watson emphasized that the budget must be viewed as a single entity, stating, "It is all one budget, and we need to start thinking in that way as we start the initial descent of this airplane."
Council Member Marc Duchen expressed his concerns about the City’s spending patterns and affordability in Austin, stating he doesn't see a need for a Tax Rate Election.
Council Member Paige Ellis proposed transportation-related amendments that would enhance the Living Streets program and shared use paths. Park maintenance and community health funding were also shared priorities.
Council Member Ryan Alter suggested amendments aimed at reducing public safety costs, proposing a pilot program where non-sworn staff manage tasks like crash reports.
