Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela teaches young Black graduates the art of brewing beer at her microbrewery in Johannesburg. The students, mostly women, come from science backgrounds and seek additional qualifications in brewing. Each day involves hands-on learning about various processes such as malting, mashing, and fermenting as they work toward creating quality beer. Nxusani-Mawela aims to expand opportunities in South Africa's beer industry for Black individuals and women, breaking gender and racial barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her program lasts for a year, combining practical skills and industry knowledge.
"When you are brewing you must constantly check your mixture. We are looking for a balance between the sugar and the grains."
"My favorite part is the mashing. It's where the beer and everything starts."
Nxusani-Mawela is believed to be the first Black woman in South Africa to own a craft brewery, breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry."
Her desire is to open South Africa's multibillion-dollar beer-brewing industry to more Black people and more women."
