The Toblerone dark chocolate bar, a long-time favorite, is being discontinued in the UK after nearly six decades due to shifts in consumer tastes, according to Mondelez, the brand's producer. The announcement coincides with high demand during Easter, evident as the bar quickly sold out on the Waitrose website. Although discontinued in the UK, it's unclear if Toblerone will still be available elsewhere. This is part of a trend where popular chocolate bars, including Nestle’s Breakaway and Milky Way Crispy Rolls, have faced discontinuation amid changing market preferences.
"While we understand that this may be disappointing for some consumers, we continue to invest in Toblerone," a Mondelez spokesperson stated regarding the product's discontinuation.
"By Friday afternoon, the bar was out of stock on the Waitrose website as social media users urged people to stock up," highlighting consumer sentiment upon the announcement.
Toblerone's discontinuation marks another shift in consumer preferences, as preferences for dark chocolate have evolved, prompting Mondelez to adapt its product offerings.
This is not the first time it has grabbed headlines; in 2023, Mondelez announced the removal of the Matterhorn image from packaging after production changes.
