Dancers at the Hamburg Ballet have expressed serious dissatisfaction with their new artistic director, Demis Volpi, in a letter to the culture minister. More than half of the dancers allege toxic work conditions since his appointment, with significant complaints about poor communication and leadership. Five star soloists have resigned as a direct consequence. The discontent has found parallels in a similar letter from dancers at Ballett am Rhein, where Volpi previously worked, highlighting a pattern of negative experiences under his direction related to transparency and trust.
The criticisms have been echoed by dancers from the company Ballett am Rhein in Dusseldorf, where Volpi was at the helm for four years.
Five of its 11 first soloists, considered the stars of the ensemble, have announced their resignation, and are due to leave the company.
