Review: The starry spectacle of Yuja Wang and Vikingur Olafsson at Disney Hall
Briefly

The recent performance featuring pianists Vikingur Ólafsson and Yuja Wang at Walt Disney Concert Hall was so popular that the Los Angeles Philharmonic added a second date. Eschewing typical two-piano teamwork, the duo performed side-by-side with divergent piano styles; Ólafsson on a Hamburg Steinway and Wang on a New York Steinway. The resulting sound was beautifully immersive yet allowed individuality from both performers. Their repertoire, showcasing a variety of pieces, was particularly effective in smaller segments, creating moments of enchanting piano magic that thrilled the audience throughout the performance.
The acoustic result proved an immersive glory in Disney while still allowing for transparency and individuality of both the pianos and the pianists.
Thrilling - but also curious. The program included a little bit of everything, and the littler the bits, the better.
Pianists typically sit facing each other, so their eyes can meet, creating in effect a double instrument of around 460 strings.
Demand for the superstar pianists' recital was such that Wednesday's sold-out performance led the Los Angeles Philharmonic to add a second date.
