Mathieu van der Poel gears up for the Spring Classics with a strategic approach at Tirreno-Adriatico, where he aims to enhance his performance ahead of key races. While rivals like Tadej Pogačar and Wout Van Aert are opting for different races or training methods, Van der Poel is testing his form in Italy after a successful start to his season in cyclocross. He aims to race smarter this year, having learned from previous experiences to maintain freshness for the upcoming Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
"I've done enough training. I need to race for my objectives that are coming up," Van der Poel explained in the Tirreno-Adriatico pre-race press conference on Sunday in a rainy Lido di Camaiore on the Tuscan coast.
"I'm a big fan of altitude and training, for sure, but everybody has a different periodization," he explained.
