The Spring Classics have long been recognized for their thrilling yet perilous nature, but recent high-profile crashes have escalated safety concerns among riders and teams. Races like Brugge-De Panne and E3 Saxo Classic have witnessed significant pile-ups, prompting discussions about the underlying causes. While some point to course conditions, others, including experienced riders like Max Walscheid, emphasize the importance of rider responsibility and behavior. The growing tension during races and increased speeds potentially lead to more severe crashes, which have left many questioning if the risk is greater now than in previous years.
In the end it's the riders who crash, so it's, in my opinion, our responsibility to ride more safely and be respectful to each other.
The rate of incidence of big pile-ups... seems higher, and the provably higher speeds mean the impacts are often worse.
