In an unexpected turn during Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under, Javier Romo from Movistar clinched victory with a late attack in Uraidla. Staying in a reduced peloton, Romo let others cover moves up Knotts Hill before accelerating six kilometers from the finish. Despite solo efforts from Chris Harper and Oscar Onley to catch him, they were unable to close the gap. Romo now leads the overall standings by eight seconds, with Jhonathan Narvaez and Patrick Konrad trailing behind.
Romo stayed in the reduced peloton, letting the other teams cover moves the second time up Knotts Hill, and then countered with a massive acceleration as they crested inside of six kilometres to go.
Behind, first Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla) and Oscar Onley (Picnic PostNL) each tried to catch Romo solo but their respective moves were shut down as the small group sped to the finish line.
Romo takes over the ochre leader's jersey with eight seconds on Narvaez.
Luke Plapp (Jayco-AlUla) led out the sprint but was swamped by the charging group.
