Asian American professor who teaches history of racism attacked in possible hate crime
""I tried to turn toward the curb to see if there was a driveway when I got hit.""
""It sounded suspicious to me because I wear a full-face helmet ... and no one can see my face. So how the hell did he know I'm Asian?""
Aki Maehara, a 71-year-old Asian American history professor and Vietnam veteran, was the victim of a vehicle collision in Montebello, which is under investigation as a hate crime. During the incident, which occurred on April 29, Maehara was targeted verbally with a racial slur before being struck by a car. Suffering serious injuries, he expressed suspicion about the driver's knowledge of his ethnicity. Although police have yet to identify any suspects, Maehara has provided a name and discussed prior harassment related to his profession.
