In one of the largest repatriation operations of its kind, almost 1,000 trafficked lemurs and tortoises were successfully returned from Thailand to Madagascar, marking a significant achievement for wildlife conservation.
This operation included careful preparation, with wildlife officers and veterinarians capturing lemurs, performing health checks, and securing them in travel crates, showing dedicated efforts in animal welfare.
The animals included 16 ring-tailed lemurs, 31 brown lemurs, 155 radiated tortoises, and 758 spider tortoises, all categorized as vulnerable to critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
The repatriation marks the culmination of several months of international cooperation to combat wildlife trafficking, which highlighted the continuing threats faced by these unique species.
