The introduction of the Spartan mascot in Brentwood Union Free School District has sparked controversy, leading to a lawsuit by Suffolk County NAACP leader William King Moss III. He argues that the Spartan symbolizes white supremacy and sends a harmful message to students regarding race and gender. Moss labels the mascot as anti-woman and believes it violates civil rights protections. In contrast, Greek-American comedian Ellen Karis defends the Spartan image, stating it embodies strength and discipline, arguing that the criticisms overlook the warrior's universally admirable traits.
"This symbol sends the message that enslaving indigenous people and excluding women from the military are acceptable," said Moss, demanding that mascots pass the 21st-century purity test.
Karis, whose family hails from near Sparta in Greece, said the warrior represents universally appealing values. 'Everything about being a Spartan is amazing. You take no crap. You're strong, You're disciplined; you will fight for your country.'
